The Gran Canaria and Canary Islands Climate
The Canary Islands comprise seven islands spanning over 400km and are just over 100km from North Africa at the closest point. It is also the most fertile of the islands, even with only 21 days of rain per year on average, falling generally between the months of December and February.
For sun-worshippers and water-sports enthusiasts alike, the 3000 hours of sun per year provide lots of scope! As the islands are on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico, the weather is very similar yet with less than half the flight time from Northern Europe. On top of all that, Gran Canaria has a wonderful selection of beaches as have all the Canary Islands, many of them having powder white sand. There is little wonder that so many advertisements have been filmed here! Today, the islands attract visitors from all over the world due to the superb, year-round climate. Trade winds are pretty much a constant feature on the island, which ensures that the humidity doesn’t get too high. Beware though, as it can be deceptive how hot it really is!
