Sailing in Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands
The director of the marina at Puerto Rico has said that the island could easily support another 800 recreational berths at its existing marinas or at new ones. There are currently 2500 mooring berths on the island, at 6 ports; three of which are in the south. Director of the Puerto Rico marina José Luis Roca says that the current ports are 90% full and that new marinas due to be built at Anfi Tauro and Bahia Feliz will not absorb all the new demand.
Roca commented that most of the demand is for mooring spots for boats of less than 12 metres. As a stop off between Europe and the Caribbean, South America and Cape Verdes, he also said there was also a much more demanding yacht market that was currently not being catered for. The last port to be built was at Anfi in the early 1990s. Neither Anfi Tauro nor Bahia Feliz have received the final go ahead and a third planned new port at Meloneras has yet to get off the ground.
